Barbara Jean
McKelvey
January 9, 1933 – February 28, 2026
Barbara Jean (Smith) McKelvey passed away peacefully in her home on February 28th, 2026, at the age of 93.
Born on January 9th, 1933, in Beech Grove, AR, she was the daughter of Gene Smith and Muriel Stallcup-Smith and the wife of Reverend Earl D. McKelvey. She spent most of her adult life in Paragould, where she was employed at Ed White Shoe Factory, and finally at Emerson Electric from 1972 until her retirement in 1995.
She loved God deeply and prayed faithfully for her children, grandchildren, the great-grands, and just about anyone who needed it including the less fortunate, the hungry and the shut-ins. If you knew her, you knew you were being covered in prayer. Her faith guided her life and shaped the home she built — not just a house, but a true gathering place filled with warmth, laughter, and unconditional love.
Her home was always open. Every weekday at 11:00 a.m. sharp, lunch was ready. Everyone knew that if you wanted a good, home-cooked meal — and plenty of it — you could find it at Mamaw’s table. And if you were thirsty, there were always cold Dr Peppers waiting in the refrigerator out on the carport. You never had to ask. She had already thought of you.
She was famous for her duck dressing (needs more sage), pecan pies and Christmas fudge. Those treats only came once a year, which made them even more special. When she made fudge, we all knew there would be arguments over who would get the last piece. Those sweet moments are now some of our sweetest memories.
She poured her love into her yard also, spending countless days outside tending her flowers. She watered them faithfully, nurtured them carefully, and took pride in watching them bloom — much like she did with her family.
In her retirement, she was an avid Atlanta Braves Baseball fan along with college and professional basketball although she always had the t.v. muted while watching. Wheel of Fortune was also a guilty pleasure of hers with the showtime schedule being her “Do Not Disturb” time that no one interrupted. Family calls or visits were lovingly conducted around her “Watching the Wheel.”
She was deeply loved by her children, grandchildren, and the great-grands. Her life was defined by service, generosity, and a heart that never stopped giving. She made sure everyone was fed, cared for, prayed over, and welcomed.
Though our hearts are broken, we find comfort knowing she is now in the presence of the Lord she loved so dearly. Her legacy lives on in every family meal, every blooming flower, every Dr Pepper shared on a warm day, and every prayer whispered for the people she loved most.
She was the heart of our family, and she will be missed beyond words.
