Obituary

James Ralph Nelson, fondly known as J.R., passed away peacefully on June 18, 2023, in Jonesboro, Arkansas. Born on September 30, 1938, in Stonewall, Arkansas, J.R. was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend to many.

J.R. was preceded in death by his loving wife, Viola Nelson, his parents, Esco and Cecil Nelson, and his brothers Houston, Gerald, Doyle, and Troy Nelson. He was also preceded by his special cousin, Phinis "Cobby" Roush, and son-in-law, Mike Chipman.

J.R. is survived by his daughters, Teresa Chipman and Kim (Lanny) Stewart, his grandchildren Grant (Tiffany) Stewart, Hunter Chipman (Tiffany Easter), and Halle (Landon) Brinkley, and two great-grandchildren on the way. He also leaves behind his sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Betty and Jerry Don Thompson, Carolyn Mason, and Marilyn Nelson, as well as many nieces and nephews who will miss him dearly.

J.R. retired from the tool room of Emerson Electric after many years of dedicated service. He was a founding member of Oak Grove Church of Christ and attended both Center Hill Church of Christ and Commissary Church of Christ with his family. He was well-respected within his community and cherished the relationships he built through his work and church involvement.

J.R. was an avid fan of country music, both performing and listening.  He was known to frequent the Roundup shows in Brookland and many other local performances.  He loved to perform backyard "family concerts" on summer nights.

A lover of the outdoors, J.R. found great joy in fishing with his grandchildren, duck hunting, and spending time in nature. He could often be found sitting on his porch swing, enjoying the beauty of the world around him and listening to country music. His love for the outdoors was only surpassed by the love he had for his family, especially his grandchildren, with whom he shared many cherished memories.

J.R.'s passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew him, but his legacy will live on through the love, laughter, and memories shared by his family and friends. His unwavering faith, compassion, and dedication to his loved ones will forever be remembered and celebrated.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, June 21, from noon until service time at Phillips Funeral Home.  The funeral service will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 21, at Phillips Funeral Home with Evan Smith officiating.  Burial will follow at Greene County Memorial Gardens.

Grant Stewart, Hunter Chipman, Landon Brinkley, Stacy Thompson, Jason Thompson, and Bryan Thompson will serve as pallbearers.
