John R. Robinson, 90, of Paragould passed away November 29, 2014 at Rector, AR. He was born December 29, 1923 at Goobertown, AR to the late Gilbert and Linnie Robinson. Soon after graduating from Greene County Tech in 1942 he joined the U.S. Navy on January 27, 1943. He was promoted to Chief Boatswain and earned five Major Battle Stars. John saved 318 men on the USS Cambell off the coast of Cape Nelson, New Guinea, on the nights of December 22 and 23, 1944. For his heroic actions he received the second highest honor the Navy bestows on a serviceman from President Harry S. Truman. He was inducted into the Greene County Tech Veteran's Hall of Fame in 2004. He was of Baptist faith and taught Sunday school for 17 years. Preceding him in death were his parents; three brothers, Jack, Jay, and Jimmy Robinson; and one sister, Wava Hollis.Survivors include his wife, Lucille Robinson; step son, Hal Thompson; brother, Joe Robinson; and sisters, Wanda Downs and Wilma Lou Horn.There will be a graveside service with military honors 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 1, 2014 at Greene County Memorial Gardens with Dennis Scudder officiating.
