Obituary

Leona Smith, a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend, passed away on September 12, 2025, at the age of 77, in her hometown of Paragould, Arkansas. Born on October 3, 1947, Leona's life was one of unwavering devotion to her family and the countless lives she touched through her work and personal endeavors.

Leona's journey began in Paragould, where she grew up surrounded by the love of her family. She shared an unbreakable bond with her twin sister, Veona Gregory, with whom she spent countless hours scouring flea markets, especially 7 Acres Flea Market, and yard sales, a testament to their shared joy in discovering treasures and making memories. Leona's close-knit family grew to include her husband of 59 years, Richard Smith, with whom she built a life filled with love, laughter, and dedication.

Leona's nurturing spirit extended beyond her family as she embraced her calling as a Registered Nurse. Her career in home health allowed her to provide care and comfort to those in need, often going above and beyond to ensure the wellbeing of her patients.

Leona was a constant presence in the lives of her daughter, Deborah Sherwood, and her grandson, Mikel Scot Sherwood, both of whom she visited regularly, making the journey to Florida to share in their lives and milestones. The birth of her great-grandchild, Elian Sherwood, brought her immense joy, and she embraced the role of great-grandmother with the same love and enthusiasm she had shown throughout her life.

Leona's family was the cornerstone of her world. Her brother, Danny Hairell, and nephews Brayden Ludwig, Nathan Gregory, Jeremy Gregory (and his wife, Erica), and Jackson Gregory, all held special places in her heart. She was a source of wisdom, support, and joy for each of them, and her influence will be felt for generations to come.  Leona was preceded in death by her parents, Cleo and Velma Hairell; brother, Russell Hairell; and sister, Rosie Hendrix.

Leona's daily visits to her sister Veona's house were a cherished ritual, a time for the two to share their lives and support each other through life's ups and downs. Their bond was a testament to the power of sisterhood and family, and it remained unbroken throughout their lives.

The family will receive friends Monday, September 15, from 11:00 a.m. until service time at Phillips Funeral Home.  The funeral service will begin at noon at Phillips Funeral Home with Tim Wooldridge officiating.
