Wilburn Dean Griggs, a devoted servant of faith passed away on December 20, 2025, in Jonesboro, Arkansas. Born on June 10, 1940, in Viola, Arkansas, Wilburn's life was a testament to his unwavering commitment to God.
For over five decades, Wilburn answered his divine calling as a Baptist minister, touching countless lives with his heartfelt sermons and compassionate guidance. His spiritual journey saw him serve numerous churches, ending his pastoral tenure at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church. Even in retirement, his dedication did not waver as he continued to share the word of God at New Liberty Baptist Church, stepping in whenever he was needed.
In his earlier years, Wilburn's passion for nurturing young minds led him to a career in education. He imparted wisdom and knowledge to high school students in Corning, Lafe, and Greenway, leaving a mark on the future generations he taught. His influence extended beyond the pulpit and the classroom, as he proudly served his country as an Army veteran, a chapter of his life that spoke to his patriotism and sense of duty.
Wilburn's interests and hobbies were as diverse as they were engaging. He was a skilled carpenter and cabinet maker, a craft that allowed him to express his creativity and precision. His mornings were often spent in the warm company of friends at the local coffee shop, where he contributed to lively discussions at "The Table of Knowledge."
There was a time when Wilburn found joy in raising cattle, a venture that connected him to the community through the local cow sale.
Above all, Wilburn's faith was the cornerstone of his existence. His relationship with God was the guiding force that shaped his actions and his purpose. Wilburn's legacy is one of unwavering faith, dedicated service, and profound kindness. His memory will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him and by the many lives he influenced during his time on this earth.
Wilburn was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar Luther and Estell Mae Griggs; brother, Otis Griggs; sister, Stella Crockett; mother-in-law, Winona Smith; nephews, Bobby Griggs, Charles Crockett, Leland Holcomb, Jr., and James Griggs; and niece, Sharon Walker.
Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Carolyn Griggs; children, Jennifer Massey (Kyle), Lori McCracken (Bill), Lynn Ford, and Miles Harvey (Rhonda); sister, Ann Holcomb; grandchildren, Bryson Massey, Kylie Harley (Tyler), Zoé Massey, Hannah McCracken, Haley McCracken, Landon McCracken, Whitney Ford, Dillon Ford (Holland), Rachel Morris (Noah), Rebecca Hendrix (Will), and Matt Harvey (Chelsea); thirteen great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Jackie Shaw and Ernestine Quinn; nephews, Larry Griggs and Roger Griggs; nieces, Carolyn Griggs Valentine and Teresa Griggs Rogers; special great nephew, James Walker; the Cossey Family; and many more nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, December 23, from 11:00 a.m. until service time at Phillips Funeral Home. The funeral service will begin at noon at Phillips Funeral Home with Bros. Kim Bridges, Bryson Massey, and Bill McCracken officiating.
